Freetown, people 1,070,200 (2004), is the largest city & capital of Sierra Leone, lying on the Freetown Peninsula on the Atlantic coast. A city occurs as port on the Atlantic Ocean. Freetown's economy revolves largely as much as its harbor, which handles Sierra Leone's independent exportation. Industries include fish packing, rice milling, petroleum refining, diamond cutting, and a manufacture of cigarettes. Freetown is placed at 8°31' Northward, 13°15' West (Octet.51667, -Thirteen.Twenty-five).
History
A front yard was 1st settled inside 1787 by freed slaves sent from England around the Cotton Tree, said to have antecedently been the slave market, by British abolitionists, who began a Sierra Leone Company. It was burnt by local tribes under King Jimmy in 1790.
Inside 1792, Freetown was founded by former slaves from either Nova Scotia, and survived existence pillaged per French in 1794. A indweller revolted inside 1800, but a British retook control, beginning expansionism which led to the creation of Sierra Leone. From either 1808 to 1874 a city served as the capital of British West Africa. A city expanded apace when several discharged slaves settled, accompanied by African soldiers who had fought for Britain in the Napoleonic Wars. When you took World War II, Britain maintained a naval base at Freetown. Descendent of the disentangled slaves, known as Creoles, play the leading role in the city, possibly though it is a minority of the people.
A city was a scene of fierce fight in the late 1990s. It was captured by ECOWAS troops seeking to restore President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah in 1998, and down the road it was unsuccessfully attacked by rebels of the Revolutionary United Front.

Notable buildings in the city include Freetown Law Courts, the Slave Gate and Portuguese Steps, St John's Maroon Church (built around 1820), St George's Cathedral (completed in 1828), Foulah Town Mosque (built in the 1830s) and the Roman Catholic Sacred Heart Cathedral. Likewise within Freetown come assorted beaches and markets, and a Sierra Leone Museum featuring the Ruiter Stone, nomoli and masks.
Freetown's suburban arethe stretch a coast, forming a working class East End of Wellington, Kissy, Cline Town, Fourah Bay, Kossa Town and Foulah Town and a bourgeois West End of Congo Town, Murray Town, Wilberforce and Aberdeen.
A city is the places of the University of Sierra Leone and is twinned with Kingston upon Hull in northern England
